MECFS Lines
Aim
The aim of MECFS Lines is to conduct biomedical scientific research into the mechanisms of ME/CFS. Our goal is to improve diagnosis and to identify leads for new treatments. To support this work, MECFS Lines is building a dataset and biobank in which data and biomaterials from people with and without ME/CFS are stored. This enables researchers within and outside MECFS Lines to carry out studies and test new ideas and approaches.
MECFS Lines is based on the Lifelines dataset and biobank. Lifelines is the only long term population study worldwide that collects data according to diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS. MECFS Lines uses the Lifelines dataset and biobank and invites Lifelines participants to take part in MECFS Lines.
Lifelines
Using this data and these biomaterials, researchers can investigate which biological processes contribute to the development of ME/CFS.
Because Lifelines participants have been followed since 2006, biomaterial is available from some participants both before and after they developed ME/CFS. This offers a unique opportunity to study the progression of the disease.
This video explains the possibilities that Lifelines provides for ME/CFS research.
Consortium
MECFS Lines is a collaboration between the institutes and organizations listed below.
Within the consortium, both new and experienced researchers from various backgrounds conduct biomedical research into ME/CFS. The consortium also trains early career researchers to ensure that more ME/CFS research will be possible in the long term. Patient representatives are closely involved as well.
MECFS Lines collaborates with the Dutch ME/CFS Cohort and Biobank (NMCB) consortium and other national and international researchers on shared measurement protocols and data exchange.
Organization
MECFS Lines started in September 2023 and will run for eight years. It is funded by ZonMw (Project number: 10091012110021).
Through the ME/CFS Research Programme, ZonMw supports studies into the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of ME/CFS. The aim is to improve the health, quality of life, and societal participation of people with ME/CFS.
Currently, six specific research projects are being conducted within MECFS Lines. These projects are also funded by ZonMw and each run for four years.
