Gastrointestinal symptoms are common among people with ME/CFS. Research has shown that the composition of the gut microbiome - the bacteria, fungi, and viruses that inhabit the intestinal tract - differs between people with ME/CFS and healthy individuals. In addition, many patients develop ME/CFS following an infection, and there is evidence that latent viral infections can become reactivated.

Both the gut microbiome and viruses play an important role in the immune system. Disruptions in their balance may contribute to inflammation and play a role in the development of ME/CFS.

This project therefore investigates the interaction between chronic viral infections and the gut microbiome in people with ME/CFS. We analyse the activity of chronic viral infections, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and human herpesviruses 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7). In addition, we study the composition of the gut microbiome and the function of the intestinal barrier.

By gaining a better understanding of these processes, we aim to identify the biological mechanisms that may underlie ME/CFS. This research could contribute to the development of new biomarkers and provide potential targets for new treatments, such as antiviral therapies, probiotics, or faecal microbiota transplantation.
